Hamad International Airport (DOH) has officially announced the launch of its new Concourses D and E, a significant milestone in the airport’s expansion strategy. The unveiling of the state-of-the-art concourses marks the culmination of a project that has increased the airport’s annual passenger capacity to over 65 million, a remarkable increase showcasing the airport’s commitment to growth and global connectivity.
The new concourses have been designed to blend seamlessly with the existing terminal layout, incorporating cutting-edge technology and improved facilities to meet the rising demand of passengers. The terminal now covers an area of 845,000 square meters, a 14% increase in size. Adding 17 new aircraft contact gates takes the total to 62, nearly 40% more than before the expansion. This facilitates greater connectivity and streamlined operations and significantly reduces reliance on bus transfers.
Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, Group Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Airways, expressed his satisfaction with the project, stating that Hamad International Airport is a fundamental pillar of Qatar’s growth and global connectivity. The successful and timely completion of the project, especially in the face of global airport expansion delays, showcases the commitment to operational excellence and strategic planning. He stressed that the expansion was about increasing capacity – an integral part of reinforcing Qatar’s position as a leading aviation hub.
Hamad Ali Al Khater, Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport, echoed these sentiments. He emphasized that the opening of Concourses D and E marks a significant milestone in expanding capacity and enhancing operational efficiency. The development optimizes resource management, strengthens airline connectivity, and ensures smoother and more efficient passenger services.
The new concourses come with several key enhancements. They feature self-boarding systems, which streamline the boarding process for a faster, more efficient journey. The airport’s expansion significantly strengthens connectivity for both passengers and airlines and enhances the passenger journey with additional retail and F&B outlets. The airport continues to lead in sustainable aviation, with Concourses D and E designed to meet GSAS 4-Star Design & Build Certification and aiming for LEED Gold Certification.
