Boeing [NYSE: BA] announced on March 14, 2025, the appointment of Don Ruhmann as its new Chief Aerospace Safety Officer. Effective immediately, Ruhmann will be tasked with fortifying Boeing’s safety culture and practices, accelerating the maturation of the company-wide Safety Management System (SMS), and continuing collaboration with the industry to enhance the aviation safety ecosystem.

The position of Chief Aerospace Safety Officer was established in 2021 to lead the company’s Global Aerospace Safety program. This initiative spans Product and services Safety, Aerospace Safety Analytics, and the Global Aviation Safety System. Consolidating these safety-oriented teams under one leadership aims to instill safety in all aspects of Boeing’s operations and ensure complete accountability throughout the internal and external safety ecosystem.

Ruhmann succeeds Mike Delaney, who recently announced his retirement after an impressive career spanning nearly four decades with Boeing. Delaney will continue to serve the company in an advisory role during the transition period. In his new role, Ruhmann will directly report to Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg and be part of the company’s Executive Council.

Boeing’s decision to appoint Ruhmann reflects his extensive experience in airplane design and certification and his strong relationships with global regulators. Most recently, Ruhmann was Vice President of Airplane Development at Boeing Commercial Airplanes. He spearheaded design and certification work for the latest members of the 737 MAX family and the new 777-9. Ruhmann’s association with Boeing dates back to 1989, when he held multiple senior leadership roles, including engineering roles in the 777 and 787 programs and commercial aviation services, now part of Boeing Global Services.
