Japan Airlines (JAL) has finalized an additional 17 Boeing 737-8 jet orders, nearly doubling its 737 MAX backlog to 38 firm orders.

JAL intends to deploy the new 737 MAX jets across its domestic network. This decision comes against the backdrop of an ongoing boom in tourism in Japan. The order marks JAL’s second for the 737-8 model.

Mitsuko Tottori, president of Japan Airlines, remarked on the enduring relationship between JAL and the 737 model, emphasizing its central role in JAL’s single-aisle fleet for the past half-century. Tottori expressed enthusiasm for the latest order, highlighting the company’s commitment to providing a superior flying experience for its customers.

The 737-8 jets offer significant advantages, including a 15% reduction in fuel use and carbon emissions compared to the Next-Generation 737-800s that JAL is currently replacing. Furthermore, the 737-8’s compatibility with other models in the 737 family will facilitate its integration into JAL’s existing fleet.

The 737-8 also features the Boeing Sky Interior, providing passengers with a refined cabin experience with advanced LED lighting, larger windows, and spacious overhead bins.

JAL, a longtime Boeing customer, already operates various Boeing aircraft, including 767s, 777s, and Next-Generation 737-800s. The airline was also among the first to operate the 787 Dreamliner. As part of its commitment to meeting the growing demand for international travel, JAL recently ordered an additional 10 787-9s.

In addition, JAL’s subsidiary, ZIPAIR Tokyo, has plans to expand its international network capacity by integrating 10 787-9s, previously operated by JAL, into its fleet. Boeing Global Services has been chosen to carry out interior modifications on these aircraft.
